How long will it take to learn German for an early teenager?

September 18, 2008 by Admin - LearnGermanLanguage.org

How long would it take to learn German if i am in early teens 13-15, have Rosetta stone which i do 1hour a day and take German lessons at school 4 times a fortnight, once i understand a little i will also start watching some German cartoons. I would like to know A LOT of German by late Novmber so that when i go back on the German Exchange i will not feel as stupid as i felt this time. Also i would like to know what they are saying about me ;) .
Thanks

It could take anywhere from 1 month to 5 years or even more! It really depends on your studyplan. You can start to speak German right here. Use our Learn German Language Blog to navigate around

depends upon how fast you learn,
    maybe 6 months.
i say that b/c ppl it takes em 6 months just teaching themselves then they go to classes to learn the verbs and stuff. but you gotta constantly keep studying and remembering stuff.

Try looking at German newspaper websites, or look at the German version of Wikipedia, it's helped me improve my German. :)

Good luck with it! I've done German for three years, but have never really done anything on it in my spare time. So as long as you know some basics, and positive/negative words, you should do OK for your German Exchange!

German cartoons are a good idea. :)

I have taken German for two years every day at school. I can speak it okay, reply and understand some coversations. If you move there, you will be immersed in it and be practicing it often. You'll catch on!! Ich heisse Shelby und ich lese Deutsch(manchmal)!!

I'm a German student of 3 years, going on four, and I can speak pretty close to fluently, althought I am better at hearing and reading it. It's not too hard to do. You have a big advantage if you are 13 your brain is a lot better at learning when your younger, I started when I was 15.

It could take anywhere from 1 month to 5 years or even more! It really depends on genetics and how fast yo generally learn. Talk to your parents, usually if they are bi-lingual or tri-lingual then you will probably learn in around 6 months.

    Good luck (:

Every person is different in their ability to learn a foreign language. You appear to be well motivated so that you should learn German rather quickly./

Just to let you know, you won't learn much with Rosetta stone besides Der mann isst und schwimmt. But if your a reasonably quick leaerner and study that much (and keep up with it) and then become an exchange student in a german speaking country, then id say you'd atleast be proficient, and be able to get by without too many problems just speaking German, but it really depends on how fast you're able to learn.
    Good luck
Oh and i'd recomend Geschichten mit Humor, the cover looks really dumb, but its a pretty good book if you already know some german
