NO! There is no reason to learn German. 99% of all germans speak English. There's no reason to learn that language (even if it sounds cool)

Rosetta Stone is good for complete beginners. Try to find children’s books in German as well (probably on Amazon) to get the basic vocabulary down. If you can take a class, that would be the best.

Go to Germany. There are great schools that give you intensive lessons and also an accommodation.
I´ve learned in Frankfurt, Goethe Institute, very expensive. And i did not learned a lot. But anyhow a certificate from this school is accepted everywhere.
Darmstadt, Studio Mondiale, cheaper, nice, Learned a lot..!! The personal intensive courses are at good price and it is a great way to learn. Darmstadt is a very nice city, full of students. Annete a great teacher.
Dusseldorf, Sprach forum Heinrich Heine, great! I learned everything there. I passed the DSH test to enter any German University (not everyone passes the exam on the first time). The prices are great. Dusseldorf is very nice and you meet a lot of people there…
I recommend that you go to Germany and stay there for more than a month. Live with German people when possible. A family or young people. That is the only way to lear and practice…!! Good luck. Here are the web pages.

Thanks!

I think if I can do it any one can. I think I was lucky as I lived in germany for 5 years whilst with the Military in Paderborn and Sennelager. My children were quite small then so I got to meet other childrens mothers who were German and they offered to help me learn, It was great! one day we went to my house and spoke nothing but English to teach them, and the next day we would go to a German friends house and speak nothing but german so I learnt quite quickly as I wanted to know what they were saying (in case they were making a fool of me) We could also ask if we didnt know the word.
You will find if you are Scottish it is maybe easier to learn, as a lot of the word sound similiar, (like Gaelic).
Go to a library and get a talking learning disc, and this will help you. also a vorterbook ..german for dictionary/german English you can pick one up very cheap in any shop that sell books.
Can you not get on a course if you are the lad that is in the forces?

The older we get, the harder it is to learn a new language. But it is very possible. If you can speak English, you will have an easier time learning German than if you spoke a Indian dialect, since many German words are similar to English.
Have fun!

How hard is it to learn to speak German fluently? Im American, and 14yrs old and Im very interested in the German culture. So Im wondering how hard it is to learn German fluently. Im sure that the learning experience [I couldn't think of the proper word?] is different for anyone, but Im asking in general. Thank you

German is NOT similar to French or Spanish. That’s not to say that learning these languages doesn’t pose it’s own problems, but German’s problems are different. For me the hardest part is what’s called declension. Basically what that means is that any article or adjective changes depending on the type of modifier, how it’s used, and the noun’s gender.

For example, you say:

Das ist ein Mann. = That is a man.
Ich kenne einen Mann. = I know a man.
Ich gebe einem Mann den Ball. = I’m giving a man the ball.

Though it’s easy to memorize these case changes, it’s very difficult for me at least to internalize them, which you need for fluency. You don’t have time to sit and think.

Fluency in any language is a lot of work. A whole lot more work than you could ever realize. Think about how long it took you to learn English so that you could ever really carry on a conversation… Probably at least 10 to 15 years. And you had the advantage of being immersed in the language 100% of your life.

Good luck. Or should I say, Viel Glueck!?
