is german an important language to learn?

November 27, 2008 by · 7 Comments

compared to portuguese or Italian? I am fluent in English, French, and Spanish and was wandering whether I should learn German or not. Im planning on become a doctor, being in research, or chemist. which language is more important globally in this case? I was thinking portuguese would be good since 200 million speak it but only in brazil, portugal, and 2 african countries. I need help!

NO! There is no reason to learn German. 99% of all germans speak English. There's no reason to learn that language (even if it sounds cool)

Is there an easy way to learn German?

I am hoping to learn German and need all the assistance I can get, Did anyone use a book and cd that they can recommend? I am on a tight budget but would appreciate any recommendations :-) Thanks!
I am living in Germany currently, so yes, that does help, but like I said I would love to have a book and cd or something so I can see and read as well as hear it! Thanks for all your suggestions :-)

The easiest way to learn any language is to live in that specific country for a bit. You cant help but pick it up.

(not really possible on a small budget though I suppose).

What’s the best way of starting out to learn German?

November 23, 2008 by · 3 Comments

Can you guys give me some suggestions or tips on how to start learning German. Maybe some good websites that I can check out too. I’m a complete beginner to the language, so any advice is welcomed. Thanks!

Rosetta Stone is good for complete beginners. Try to find children’s books in German as well (probably on Amazon) to get the basic vocabulary down. If you can take a class, that would be the best.

Anyone know any place on the web to learn German for free?

I've always wanted to learn German, and I know some stuff from High School, but I would love to be able to speak it well. Is there any place free, or cheap, (preferably cheap) on the web where I could go?

How to learn and speak german?

November 19, 2008 by · 6 Comments

I want to know what i should learn to speak the language. I am taking a class in school to learn german but i want to learn more. How can i be able to speak it better?

danke =D

Hallo :D

nice that you are learning German.

Here are some tips to learn German:

Some courses that come to mind:
Pimsleur German
Assimil German
Rosetta Stone German (not a big fan of it but some seem to like it)

Passive Learning tips:
- look around on IMDB for good rated German movies, get them with English subtitles.
- In Germany they synchronize everything on TV, you could even get American movies spoken in German (although i admits i find it highly annoying)

I wish you all the best in learning the German language

How can I learn German with a busy schedule?

November 15, 2008 by · 7 Comments

I always have lots of schoolwork to do and rarely anytime for leisure, but I want to learn to speak, read, and write German (I plan to move to Germany in a couple of years).

A good book is "German in 10 minutes a day".
It's a good book to learn the basics and it's structured for a busy person.
My friend used this book when he was first learning German. It must have worked for him, because when I visited him in Heidelberg, he was very comfortable with the language.

Eventually, you will need to listen to tapes/Cd's to become familiar with the language. Check your local schools for conversational German classes.

I you know anyone who speaks the language, spend time with them and speak German.

Can you take a German class at your school, for credit toward your degree?

Good luck.

Does any one know of a cheap and effective way to learn German?

I have checked the Rosetta Stone software and that is over $200. I was wondering if any one knows of any kind of software/books that you can learn German from for under $100.

http://www.fsi-language-courses.com/default.aspx

That's the FSI language courses from the '60s. It's got a good German course and it's free! :)
The downside is that it's somewhat boring and just focuses on grammar drills and such. Also, some of the words are a little dated.

http://www.assimil.com/

That's a company's site that makes really good books to learn languages. There's a german course in English, and if you speak French there are several courses. You can buy the books + CDs on amazon for pretty cheap and they're great.
