I always have lots of schoolwork to do and rarely anytime for leisure, but I want to learn to speak, read, and write German (I plan to move to Germany in a couple of years).

A good book is "German in 10 minutes a day".
It's a good book to learn the basics and it's structured for a busy person.
My friend used this book when he was first learning German. It must have worked for him, because when I visited him in Heidelberg, he was very comfortable with the language.

Eventually, you will need to listen to tapes/Cd's to become familiar with the language. Check your local schools for conversational German classes.

I you know anyone who speaks the language, spend time with them and speak German.

Can you take a German class at your school, for credit toward your degree?

Good luck.

I am going to germany in 3 years with a friend and know only a little German. Should I continue learning the language or wait a couple years and just go the Germany?

I think you should continue learning the language. Three years is a long time – what you could learn in that amount of time would really help with getting around the country and maybe even having conversations… Even after three years of study there will still be alot you can learn and improve on such as your accent. Even though many Germans speak English, most (I've heard) will be appreciative of your attempts to learn their language.
Living there will make the biggest difference – if you make sure to go and involve yourself with locals. My family hosted an exchange student thirteen years ago and when he came to the US he knew very little English (like "yes" and "no"). But he was very social and became involved alot at school and after a year the advancements he made were amazing!
Hope this helps & best of luck!!

German is actually easy for native English speakers, because English is a Germanic language. The biggest difference is that nouns can be Masculine, Feminine, or Neutral (instead of all Neutral like English), but even that doesn't really matter that much.

Good luck!

I would like to know A LOT of German by late Novmber so that when i go back on the German Exchange i will not feel as stupid as i felt this time. Thanks

It could take anywhere from 1 month to 5 years or even more! It really depends on your studyplan. You can start to speak German right here. Use our Learn German Language Blog to navigate around
