What helped me a lot was also renting German movies and watching them in German with English subtitles. You start to get a feeling for the sound of the language and pick up little conversational phrases as well. This is sort of passive learning, you learn while you watch. I recomend "Run Lola Run" "The Princess and the Warrior" and "The Lives of Others" Youtube is also a good source. Viel Glück! Try to find children's books in German as well (probably on Amazon) to get the basic vocabulary down. I would say the best way, besides moving to a country that speaks German all the time, is to use websites, podcasts, listen to music, some books. There are great podcasts on Itunes which are free to download and let you listen to the language for free. If you don't want to, you probably wouldn't even have to buy books because of the Internet. There are some great websites, if you go to this site: http://lw.lsa.umich.edu/german/hmr/links/online_lessons.html it has a LOT of great websites listed. I would suggest also listening to music to get a feel for pronunciation and even sometimes word order and colloquialisms, although don't depend on that because it is only music and will be sung to sound good, even if grammar and pronunciation isn't perfect.
