You can get a basic knowledge of the language by visiting classes, finding native speakers to talk to and studying at home using books. But there is no way you can learn to speak perfect, fluent German in just one year. It is a far too complicated language and has little in common with English. Practice is most important (speaking!!!) Definitely take this opportunity to travel and study abroad, it will be so fun and educational (but not boring educational) I did it both in High School and College. (easy A's too!)
