my parents lived in germany for about 2 years, my mum was like a nanny for a family and she picked it up really well, still speaks it now and this was 25 years ago. my dad worked on the roads and can only speak it when he’s had a few beers! haha.. i think getting a job working with kids is probably good because they’re still learning too, and so you can learn together

if english/american is your mother tongue then it should be difficult to understand what they say. you could buy some english-german dictionary and some tapes with lectures on them. the second step is asking your friends to talk to you in german and you telling them how you understand what they say. you can also get some book with simple phrases and start using them, like ‘where’s nearest supermarket?’, ‘what time is it’ and so on.
hope this helps a little

The key to learning a language as quickly as possible is to talk as much as possible. Try to aquire basic language skills through a textbook or class and then talk to people. It usually takes around 3-4 hours a week for 5 years to learn a decent level of German in school. Should work a lot more quickly though if you are in Germany and use it every day.

Go out and about and meet as many people as you can. Don’t be afraid to talk to them, they won’t blame you if you get it wrong, on the contrary, they’ll be flattered that you’re making the effort to learn their language.
Watch German TV, listen to German radio programmes, surf the net to German websites.
Buy German books/magazines/newspapers and read them.
Get a good dictionary e.g. Langenscheidt, Duden
Make friends, enjoy life, but remember, learning a language takes a lifetime. Even the Germans you meet are still learning.
